Why does it sound different from Voice Memos?

Sonolens+ switches off everything iOS normally does to a recording: automatic level, noise reduction and the voice low cut. You get what the microphone actually hears. Quiet places stay quiet, so use the preamp to bring the level up.

Preamp and level

The built-in microphone has no adjustable gain, so the preamp adds up to +40 dB inside the app. The meters, the waveform and the file all show the level after the preamp. If you raise it a lot, record in 32-bit float: a peak that goes over 0 dB can still be brought back later.

Pre-roll and self-timer

With pre-roll on, the take starts a few seconds before you pressed Record, so a bird that sang first is not lost. The self-timer gives you time to walk away from the phone; a take started with the timer has no pre-roll, so your footsteps are not in it.

Sample rates

The iPhone's own microphone runs at 48 kHz. Other rates are converted with the highest quality converter, and the Input page says so. A USB microphone or interface can record at its own rate natively.

Where are my files?

On the Takes page, and in the Files app under On My iPhone → Sonolens+. WAV files are Broadcast WAV with the date, time and (with Geotag on) location inside. WAV splits at 4 GB; CAF has no size limit.

It stopped recording

Recording continues with the screen locked. It stops on its own only when storage is almost full or when Auto stop is set. If a call interrupts, recording resumes when the call ends.
